The Bird
Fold your hand open and look at what you are holding. The body is a cosmos in miniature, every part of it encoding what the universe is made of. Four fingers and a thumb: five elements, the thumb, Fire; the index finger, Air; the middle finger, Æther; the ring finger, Earth; the little finger, Water, written into your anatomy.
Tighten your fingers into a fist. Now release your ring finger. What do you see? Yes, you are right – you see the f*** you gesture! And yet, your longest finger, rising from the very centre of your hand, belongs to Æther, the forgotten element and the one unrepresented within Western Astrology’s zodiacal construct!
When Western natural philosophy hardened into materialist science, Æther was the element it set aside because it resisted both observation and measurement, and with it went something of the knowledge of what we are. Why? Because Æther is the invisible plenum from which all physical creation proceeds, the prima materia, the living connective tissue of existence itself. Fire, Air, Earth, and Water are four vibrational states of Æther, four modes of the one underlying reality, the knowledge that everything is made of one substance and that separation is a derived condition.
Those same five elements live in you as they live in your hand. Æther, Spirit, is the witness, the sovereign presence behind all experience, the pure I Am. Fire is the will: I will. Air is the mind in its restless motion: I think. Water is the feeling body, the deep tidal interior: I feel. Earth is the ground of action, the weight of what the hands bring forth: I act.
You are the Ætheric centre, the Spirit at the heart of your own fourfold nature, animating will, thought, feeling, and action. And isn’t curious that Æther has been set aside, its sacred correspondence to be replaced instead by a vulgarity? Intentional, perhaps? Maybe not, but interesting nonetheless, as we live in a time that is seeking to reclaim our deeper origins, our spiritual heritage. So the next time you turn your hand and raise up your longest finger, remember that you are making the sign of the Ætheric Self, the part of you that stands at the centre of your own fourfold nature, witnessing, sovereign, whole and you are claiming your unassailable holism that no-one can deny.

Super interesting Andrew!! Really loved this article.
In Kundalini yoga, the use of Mudras and mantras is a key element of the practice. Mudras are hand positions, and mantras are normally sung or spoken with intention.. Each mudra has its own significance given their connections, as you have so eloquently mentioned. Each finger also has a connection to a planet, and when using the positions, it gives further significance to the overall intention. I really love how the combination of vibration/frequency, with the mantras/chanting coupled with the use of hand gestures, gives further depth to the overall process, which is ultimately to connect to our inner source of energy so that we may radiate outwards and connect with the higher source... xx
