Her Mercy

There comes a moment, often in the small hours when the dark feels unending, when your own breath sounds like a stranger’s and you can’t quite remember when hope slipped through your fingers. You sit there in the silence, hands trembling with the weight of all you’ve carried and all you’ve failed to carry, wondering whether anyone—or anything—has heard your quiet pleas.

And then, in that fragile stillness, something within you shifts. Not a thunderclap, not salvation in grand attire, just a looseness in the chest, as though a single thread has been unpicked from the tight weave of your suffering. You realise you’re not being punished for faltering. You’re simply being readied.

For grace does not rush. She waits with a patience deeper than any night you’ve endured, watching you circle the same old doors, the same old fears, until at last you tire of hiding. Only then does she move, like light along the edge of a curtain at dawn, subtle yet unmistakable.

And when your heart cracks, when it truly cracks open as you surrender, something gentle is finally able to seep in. And there, in the quiet wreckage of everything you thought you were meant to be, a new voice rises. Soft, steady, unhurried. A voice that invites and a presence that frees you from the notion that you were ever broken beyond mending. You feel your edges soften, your breath deepen; the world loosens its grip.

This is Mercy.

She arrives when the ground beneath you gives way, when the rubble settles, when you finally stop running from what aches. And when she comes, you know it. Because for the first time in a long time, you feel the faint but undeniable possibility of being free.
